The Monarch Migration - A Kaleidoscope of Wings in Mexico
Dear globetrotters and lovers of the natural world,
For the next chapter of our "Pata de Perro" blog series, we embarked on a journey to the heart of Mexico. The allure? A magical event that takes place every winter, a phenomenon of nature so profound and resplendent that it will leave you breathless. A natural spectacle that paints the skies with delicate flutters of orange and black: the migration of millions of Monarch butterflies to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve near Morelia and Mexico City.
I originally made this trip with a friend via Morelia in December 2020. It was an amazingly spectacular year from all accounts as most people were restricting their travels. I wanted to revisit the subject after a friend from Alabama sent me a video and asked to go. If my friends know anything, if you want to explore Mexico or Latin America, I’m always up to join in the adventure.
The Enchanting Journey Begins
Our trip commenced from Mexico City. After immersing ourselves in the city's vibrant culture and history, we started our voyage towards the Monarch sanctuaries nestled in the fir-clad mountains of Michoacán and the State of Mexico. The sanctuaries are about a three to four-hour drive from Mexico City, with Morelia being a charming halfway stop. Its colonial architecture, combined with the magnificent Cathedral, is a sight to behold, setting the right mood for the enchantment that awaited us.
The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve
The butterflies travel more than 2,500 miles each year from Canada and the US to Mexico to escape the harsh winter, creating one of nature's most incredible phenomenons. This journey leads them to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, spanning over 200 square miles. The Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, housing multiple sanctuaries, including El Rosario and Sierra Chincua, where we witnessed the magic unfold.
El Rosario: A Hike Into a Living Fantasy
The first stop was El Rosario, the largest and most popular sanctuary. After a scenic hike uphill through dense, fragrant fir forests, we found ourselves in a living fantasy. As we ascended, the first sight of the butterflies left us awe-struck. The air around us was suddenly alive, teeming with these vibrant creatures.
Under the boughs, they clung like golden ornaments, their bodies weighing down the branches. In the sunlight, they took flight, covering the sky in a tapestry of orange and black. There was a surreal, almost meditative beauty watching these tiny creatures flutter, their wings catching the sun.
Sierra Chincua: An Undulating Orange Blanket
Next was Sierra Chincua, a quieter but equally magnificent sanctuary. The view here was a sea of orange and black, with the fir trees blanketed under thousands of Monarch butterflies. With each breeze, the branches would shudder, shaking the butterflies into flight, creating a dream-like spectacle against the cobalt-blue sky. There was a palpable sense of peace, a tranquil serenity amidst the humming of wings.
A Note on Preservation
The beauty of the Monarch butterfly migration is undeniably magical, but it's also fragile. Over the years, conservation efforts have been paramount in maintaining this delicate balance of nature. Respect for the sanctuaries and their guidelines is critical. Remember, we're guests in their winter home.
Returning Home: An Experience Unforgotten
As we journeyed back to the bustle of Mexico City, we left with a profound respect and admiration for these resilient creatures. Their migration is a testament to the wonders of nature and the interconnectedness of life. It's an event that needs to be experienced first-hand to truly appreciate its scale and beauty.
Visiting the Monarch butterflies in Mexico is more than just a trip; it's a journey of discovery, an experience that connects you to the rhythm of nature, a reminder of the world's beautiful fragility. And for that, it's worth every moment.

La Migración de la Monarca - Un Caleidoscopio de Alas en México

Para el próximo capítulo de nuestra serie de blogs "Peta de Perro", emprendimos un viaje al corazón de México. ¿El atractivo? Un evento mágico que ocurre cada invierno, un fenómeno de la naturaleza tan profundo y resplandeciente que te dejará sin aliento. Un espectáculo natural que pinta los cielos con delicados aleteos de naranja y negro: la migración de millones de mariposas monarca a la Reserva de la Biosfera de la Mariposa Monarca cerca de Morelia y la Ciudad de México.
El Encantador Viaje Comienza
Nuestro viaje comenzó en la Ciudad de México. Después de sumergirnos en la vibrante cultura e historia de la ciudad, iniciamos nuestro viaje hacia los santuarios de las Monarcas enclavados en las montañas de abetos de Michoacán y el Estado de México. Los santuarios están a unas tres o cuatro horas en coche de la Ciudad de México, siendo Morelia una encantadora parada a medio camino. Su arquitectura colonial, combinada con la magnífica Catedral, es un espectáculo para la vista, creando el ambiente adecuado para el encanto que nos esperaba.
La Reserva de la Biosfera de la Mariposa Monarca
Las mariposas viajan más de 4,000 kilómetros cada año desde Canadá y los Estados Unidos a México para escapar del crudo invierno, creando uno de los fenómenos más increíbles de la naturaleza. Este viaje las lleva a la Reserva de la Biosfera de la Mariposa Monarca, que se extiende a lo largo de más de 300 kilómetros cuadrados. La Reserva es Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO, alberga múltiples santuarios, incluyendo El Rosario y Sierra Chincua, donde presenciamos cómo se desplegaba la magia.
El Rosario: Una Caminata Hacia una Fantasía Viviente
La primera parada fue El Rosario, el santuario más grande y popular. Después de una pintoresca caminata cuesta arriba a través de densos bosques de abetos fragantes, nos encontramos en una fantasía viviente. A medida que ascendíamos, la primera vista de las mariposas nos dejó asombrados. El aire a nuestro alrededor de repente cobró vida, llenándose de estas vibrantes criaturas.
Bajo las ramas, se aferraban como adornos dorados, sus cuerpos pesaban sobre las ramas. A la luz del sol, echaban a volar, cubriendo el cielo en un tapiz de naranja y negro. Había una belleza surrealista, casi meditativa, en ver a estas pequeñas criaturas revoloteando, sus alas atrapando el sol.
Sierra Chincua: Un Ondulante Manto Naranja
Luego estaba Sierra Chincua, un santuario más tranquilo pero igualmente magnífico. La vista aquí era un mar de naranja y negro, con los abetos cubiertos
por miles de mariposas Monarca. Con cada brisa, las ramas temblaban, sacudiendo a las mariposas en vuelo, creando un espectáculo de ensueño contra el cielo azul cobalto. Había una palpable sensación de paz, una serenidad tranquila en medio del zumbido de las alas.
Una Nota Sobre la Conservación
La belleza de la migración de la mariposa Monarca es innegablemente mágica, pero también es frágil. A lo largo de los años, los esfuerzos de conservación han sido fundamentales para mantener este delicado equilibrio de la naturaleza. El respeto por los santuarios y sus pautas es crítico. Recuerda, somos invitados en su hogar de invierno.
Regresando a Casa: Una Experiencia Inolvidable
Al volver al bullicio de la Ciudad de México, nos fuimos con un profundo respeto y admiración por estas criaturas resilientes. Su migración es un testimonio de las maravillas de la naturaleza y la interconexión de la vida. Es un evento que hay que experimentar en primera persona para apreciar realmente su escala y belleza.
Visitar las mariposas Monarca en México es más que un viaje; es un viaje de descubrimiento, una experiencia que te conecta con el ritmo de la naturaleza, un recordatorio de la bella fragilidad del mundo. Y por eso, vale cada momento.
