Holding a Story Lightly: The Art of Embracing Flexibility
In our fast-paced lives, we are often drawn to stories and narratives that help define our world and our place within it. Yet, as we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of our experiences, it's beneficial to embrace the philosophy of holding a story lightly. This concept was recently put into words for me by a great friend and mentor; however, I believe this is something I have unintentionally been practicing for years. I always thought I was loose with the facts in stories I hold and tell repeatedly. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story, right?
After this concept was mentioned to me in passing, the ultimate power of this practice immediately became crystal clear. How tightly do you hold onto your cache of stories we all carry with us? And are these old stories keeping you from evolving into the person you are meant to become or holding you back in other ways?
The Fluidity of Perspective
Our perspectives, much like rivers, are in constant motion, shaped and reshaped by the experiences and insights we gather. Clinging tightly to a single narrative can be restrictive and can limit our understanding. At Forrest Glover, we believe in the transformative power of being open to change, allowing us to view situations with a broader and more enlightened vision.
Emotions and Narratives
Stories are powerful conduits of emotion. However, when we become too attached to a specific story or belief, it can dominate our emotional responses, sometimes blinding us to other perspectives. By holding these narratives lightly, we allow ourselves the freedom to experience a wider range of emotions and reactions, leading to a more balanced and authentic life.
I hold especially loosely to any negative stories or perceptions that present themselves during daily life. Maybe foolhardy, but I have chosen to believe that everyone has my best interests at heart and know that noone has any negative emotions toward me unless they tell me directly. These are the rules. There ain’t no beef between us unless it is acknowledged face to face.
Continuous Learning: An Ever-evolving Journey
Life is a series of lessons, with new experiences and knowledge around every corner. When we approach our stories with flexibility, we keep ourselves receptive and curious, ever ready to embrace the next lesson. This openness ensures that we remain adaptable and ready to grow, no matter what comes our way.
Not to mention how this type of flexibility of mind and the stories within it can immediately make you life less tumultuous. There is no ego driven need or desire to be right. This is not to say you will abandon your core values. I hope mine principles I was born with to, at times, ridiculous standard but knowing that they don’t need to be fought for or protected just lightens the load.
Crafting Meaningful Connections
Relationships thrive in an atmosphere of understanding and empathy. By not being overly attached to our narratives, we create space for deeper connections with others. It helps us become better listeners and more compassionate individuals, fostering relationships that are both meaningful and enriching.
The Beauty of Uncertainty
While having answers can be comforting, there's undeniable beauty in the mysteries and uncertainties of life. By holding our stories lightly, we approach situations with a sense of wonder, ready to embrace the unknown and savor the richness of life's unpredictabilities.
I also try to only have loose plans and a small list of must dos at any given time. If you continue you work towards your desired direction but fill your days with joyful and thought provoking activities but pad your hours with plenty of free time, the universe often opens up beautiful unknown paths you could have never dreamed of and the space to follow them at your leisure.
I’ve grown to understand the value of approaching narratives with a gentle touch. By doing so, we ensure that our perspectives remain as dynamic and evolving as the world around us. Embracing this philosophy, we encourage a life that's open, receptive, and always ready for the next chapter. The next chapter that we can just as easily toss out the window when it no longer serves us well.
