Best Cajun Style Restaurants in Guadalajara, Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta - La Edicion del Güero

It’s a beautiful day outside in Colonia Americana, Guadalajara, so I decided to take a quick walk to Sanborns for some interior design magazines and then check out Red Shrimp on Av. Vallarta. I know it is a bit early to eat in Guadalajara, but I was the only one in the restaurant. We typically eat lunch around 2 or 3pm and actually quite a lot of businesses closed for an hour to allow their employees to eat.

Shrimp’n Beer - Prepare to get messy and please wear the bib. I have no idea how the make the shrimp and Cajun sauce so juicy. I took a direct hit to the chest when bitting into a piece of corn and then another one when trying to pull off a poor shrimp’s head.

This is definitely my new favorite restaurant for plain ole Cajun style crab boil shrimp. I opted for hot which was definitely the right choice for me. I arrived about 2:20p and the place was completely full by the time I left. 3pm is a pretty standard time for Tapatios to eat, so this wasn’t a huge surprise.

C. Manuel López Cotilla # 1904 A, Col Americana, Americana, 44160 Guadalajara, Jal.

On a side note, I feel like I should explore this 2 or 3 block stretch of restaurants more. I really want to try Mutante across the street soon https://mutanterestaurante.com/ and have already tried La Moresca Lopez Cotilla http://lamoresca.com/ next door with my ex in November 2021.

La Docena - La Docena is a whole different concept than the other restaurants mentioned in this blog and definitely one of my favorite mini restaurant chains in Mexico. I would general tend to say I prefer restaurants in Punto Sāo Paulo in Guadalajara, but the La Docena location in Andares just does it for me for some reason.

Like I said, this place is more than just shrimp in a bag. I take most people that visit me in Guadalajara to La Docena. I’ve actually had visitors complain that I didn’t go to enough Mexican restaurants when they visit. 1. I don’t eat a ton of Mexican food in general because that is what I cook at home and there are so many other amazing options in Guadalajara. 2. (I usually don’t mention this) We have mostly been eating Mexican food the whole time. You just didn’t realize it. However, this is NOT Mexican food.

I almost always order the Oysters Rockefeller and a whole roasted fish. They have great oyster chowder and other amazing options. The tequila Tradicional with agua mineral is usually my go-to drink. They pour heavy, not like Campomar Providencia heavy but heavy enough for flavor.

Andares (Zapopan) - Blvd Puerta de Hierro 4659, Puerta de Hierro, 45116 Zapopan, Jal.
Punto São Pau (GDL) - São Paulo 1491, Providencia, 44630 Guadalajara, Jal.
La Roma (CDMX) - Av. Álvaro Obregón 31, Roma Nte., Cuauhtémoc, 06700 Ciudad de México, CDMX
Polanco (CDMX) - Av. Homero 135, Polanco, Polanco V Secc, Miguel Hidalgo, 11560 Ciudad de México, CDMX

Captain Cajun -
Mérida 115, Versalles, 48310 Puerto Vallarta, Jal.

Red Shrimp - I feel like this restaurant was pretty light on the shrimp for the price. Flavor was pretty good but nothing compared to Shrimp’n Beer, also in Guadalajara, or Captain Cajun in the Versalles neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta.

The new location for Red Shrimp is Av. Ignacio L. Vallarta 1589-L1, Col Americana, Lafayette, 44160 Guadalajara, Jal.
